Partnership with University of Fribourg
Students of the Physics Department of the University of Fribourg, during their second and third year of study, have the opportunity for practical experimental work at the Observatoire d’Épendes. In the experiment the students can measure the rotational velocity of Saturn or Jupiter. Furthermore double star systems and gas nebula can be studied.
It is also possible to perform photometric studies on stars and star clusters using a camera with blue and green filters. These studies reveal information about the color, surface temperature and spectral classification of the star (Hertzsprung Russell diagram).
The choice of the project will depend on the season. From this work students learn the manipulation of a telescope, get familiar with the alignment and calibration of a spectrograph, and perform all data treatment steps from the picture to the final result using the Matlab software.
